Osteopathy and sport

knee_joint-largeOsteopathy is an important discipline for athletes, the principles of which can help keep athletes at their training peak and also enable a swift return to sport following strains and injuries resulting from overuse. Indeed, athletes from many disciplines at many levels are increasingly turning to osteopaths for their detailed knowledge of body mechanics.

Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment, with its principal emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. It is a system of therapy which focuses on restoring normal body mechanics and manipulation to correct faulty body structures. Osteopathy is also considered a complementary medicine, taking into account not only the physical symptoms but also recognising the influence of one’s lifestyle, attitudes, diet and general well-being in terms of overall physical ability.

Addressing the ‘whole’ in terms of body mechanics, osteopathy offers a great deal for active individuals. By improving the function of the various body parts altogether, the result is often improved coordination, power, explosiveness, strength and speed.

Tackling sports injuries

Often related to inflammatory problems, osteopaths target tissue inflammation using several methods including muscle and connective tissue massage and manipulation of the joints. This hands-on approach can help to reduce muscle spasm and increase mobility, helping to create a healthier state in which damaged tissues can heal.

In advising athletes on injuries, osteopaths consider many factors relevant to treatment. As important as the actual injury are all the other contributing factors which may have made the body susceptible to damage in the first instance. Identifying all the relevant factors can encourage a more rapid recovery and return to normal activity and training.

Osteopaths often prescribe exercises for the athlete to do at home as part of the rehabilitation process - depending on the severity of an injury, of course. With the most basic of gym equipment, including thera-bands, dumbbells and swiss balls, exercises are designed to improve muscle and joint function, often specific to one’s sport. Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur or a competing professional, Osteopathy can help with the prevention and treatment of common sporting injuries.
