What Gerard has to say…
“My name is Gerard Coville. I have been involved in Martial arts and fitness most of my life. I started training in Judo at the age of seven and then progressed from there. I still continue to train in Judo to this day.
At the age of 17 I started competing in Muay Thai (having been to Thailand quite a few times) and won the British Title in that. I moved up a weight category and then beat the British Champion at that weight too. At around about that time the first MMA shows were promoted and so I competed in these (combining my judo and Muay Thai). I won the UK ultimate challenge MMA belt (a four man knockout style tournament) and have fought abroad in countries such as Italy and Finland. I’ve competed in Submission Wrestling competitions too here and abroad. Since then I’ve been running a successful MMA club, Cambridge FreeFight which has produced a few fighting champions (British and International).
I’ve always been interested in fitness and nutrition as this all combines with the training you need to do for MMA. I’m a qualified PT and nutrition advisor, as well as studying towards a sports science bachelors degree.
Obviously the nutritional approach will be different for each individual but generally for me it works on the basis of cutting out sugars, increasing the good fats in the diet and sometimes supplementation (I take OmegaFlex, which contains EPA and glucosamine) and protein, making sure to keep the meals small and regular (trying to consume some protein every 2-3 hours). I also make sure that fruit and vegetables are a incorporated in good quantity.(Watch out for fruit juice concentrate as this can be loaded with sugar).
When I’m training hard I increase my carbohydrates slightly (keeping carb intake to around the exercise time), otherwise I eat a moderate amount of carbs. I dedicate as much of my time as possible with teaching MMA and fitness - my passions in life.”
My approach to nutrition is basically to keep it simple. There is no need for these fad diet approaches you often hear about. Not only are they hard, but they also tend to only work for a few weeks/months before the person gets bored and reverts back to their normal habits.
